Julie Buckworth
Julie Buckworth is a local massage therapist.    Her passion for the last 30 years has been metaphysics, in the form of natural healing, personal growth and natural health, working in the fields of  weightloss counselling, endermologie and herbal medicine in  support of women.

Hence the title “Artist” is relatively new.    Although the love of  Art is not.   Her creativity was evident from the beginning.   Her memories are few from the early days however she can still recall the smell of poster paint and the first painting she did In grade 2.   She will tell you it’s in her genes and it comes from her grandfather. However, observing her work and her sensitivity on the canvas, one is not so reluctant to say….it’s a gift.

What she brings to the canvas is 60 years of living.    The highlights of which include, one 29 year old son, one 29 year old stepson, studying Italian in Florence, working as nanny in London, Skiing in Austria, summer on a Greek Island, a cheese fondue in Switzerland and “too numerous to mention” Art Galleries and Museums throughout 19 European countries.   Julie works in oils, acrylics, has undertaken commissions in watercolours and has done a small amount in pastels.

Although formally trained in Art and Design, Julie majored in Ceramics and will still confirm today that sitting on the wheel and taking a lump of clay to its inevitable form is still what drives her.   It’s the passion that now holds the paintbrush…..for the moment.     Her many exhibitions have been in both mediums….”nothing accentuates a pot like a painting”.

Julie managed and operated her own Gallery in Melbourne for 4 years supporting many local artists and a TAFE Exhibition, before moving to Queensland for the second time.   During that period many of her pieces found there way to Japan, Switzerland, Canada, N.Z. and England.   Working as Assistant to the Curator of the Doncaster Council Gallery a few years previous, gave her a good grounding in organising and setting up exhibitions.

Her early career was mainly in the media (3UZ and the Australian Newspaper in Melbourne, and 4BC in Brisbane).    Working as a Copy Writer has adequately equipped her for marketing her own work….and was a leading factor for her working as a feature writer for her local paper, “The Warrandyte Diary”.

After College in 1991 Julie, along with 5 of her classmates, founded the Eastern Studio Potters in Melbourne where she held the position of Secretary for 9 years. The group is still going strong today.   Julie has taught pottery at two Community Art Centres to both Adults and children.   As well as giving private lessons in Rockhampton.

The five years in Rockhampton after her marriage again found her Secretary…. this time -The Capricornia Potters Group.

The establishment of the Somerset Art Society Inc. in Esk “Is just what the town needed”  Julie said.  “We had over 45 interested persons attend our inaugural meeting. There are so many talented artists in the area. We hope the Society will be instrumental in increasing tourism”.

Julie has settled in Esk with her husband, Rob, as they, not so much move to retirement, but as Julie says, “ have more time to paint and pot.”  To grow and expand through these mediums and continue her spiritual journey.

Chekhov advised, “If you want to work on your Art, work on your life.” That’s another way of saying that in order to have self expression, we must have a self to express.

“Therein lies my motivation, inspiration and excitement.” Julie said.
